Many patients use excuses like “I don’t want to become addicted on pills” or “I don’t like taking pills” to resist starting an SSRI or mood stabilizer.
Meanwhile, they are totally fine with benzos or sleep medication since they are only “as needed” and they believe it’s less of a commitment, and not habit-forming.
One thing we all need to remember is that part of the stigma around mental health and psych meds is due to the negative criticism we are always making about “getting hooked on pills” which never seems to apply to insulin for diabetes or lisinopril for hypertension.
So people with depression, bipolar, anxiety – they’re doomed if they get treatment and they’re doomed if they don’t.
Please help to fight mental health stigma by not talking about about psych medications in a negative light. We need people to live happy, healthy lives without the fear of being judged.
